Caspian Wharf To Get Highrise Neighbour

Published on 31-03-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
Continuing the redevelopment of the east London area of Devon's Road just south of Bow is plans for a new 20 storey tower and numerous other associated blocks that will form part of an emerging urban quarter.

Coming from the pens of ORMS Architecture Design, the development is a joint venture between Glebe Holdings and the Workspace Group who each put up £20 million of their own money to start projects such as these.

The design includes not only the tower but also 9 blocks that rise above podium level which, with the exception of one, line the east and west sides of the site.

Devon's Road will contain some 6,220 square metres of offices, 490 square metres of flexible space and 559 new apartments, 36% of which will be affordable, and new outdoors space that will take up 41% of the total land on the plot.

The tower is a spliced and stepped block with its slender elements opening to the north and south. These sides of the tower have facades that are dominated by warmly coloured terracotta rainscreen and steel lined external glass balconies that stand in front of the aluminium framed glazing.

Running through the centre of the development is the largest part of this, an oblong rectangular shaped courtyard that stretches from north to south ringed with the numerous blocks along almost the entire length of what is currently Cranwell Close. When built this will be an area about 150 metres long.

The development is located immediately adjacent the Devons Road DLR station and part of the scheme will incorporate a new public square and circulation space in front of the station.

Other planned developments in the area include Caspian Wharf, also off Violet Road. Devons Road is actually masterplanned so that the height of its southern buildings will connect and continue the northern spread of Caspian Wharf.

Combined, the end result will be a complete transformation of the eastern side of Violet Road all the way from the canal at the southern end to Devons Road which bounds it to the north from its current light industrial and warehouse uses.
