Regal Tower Height Revealed

A much anticipated planning application has started to finally go in in Birmingham for could be the tallest skyscraper ever built outside of London.
Called Regal Tower, the scheme is situated on a site that's bounded by Sheepcote Street, Broad Street and Oozell's Way to the south-west of Birmingham city centre between it and mass of mid-rise buildings along Hagley Road.
Regal Tower is the work of Aedas Architects who have penned a 198.75 metre tall building with 56 floors. The vast amount of the tower is aimed at being a hotel with 289 rooms for patrons and a further 256 serviced apartments from the 32nd to 48th floor.
At ground level will be a large amount of retail space with the frontage of it running along Broad Street, in total 577 some square metres of space on offer. There will also be a small number of proper residential apartments within the tower filling three penthouse floors with 3,140 square metres of floor-space, although the precise make up of the accommodation schedule has yet to be revealed.
Cladding the skyscraper will be a full height glass curtain wall, with detail added through coated metal panels, and louvered metal panels with projecting fins.
Some of these fins will run vertically up the tower and continue above the roof as a façade overrun that works in a similar manner to a medieval lantern tower ringed with spirelets of which the Boston Stump is the most famous example.
Unfortunately the entire planning application hasn't been filed yet, or validated by the local council so there are many details to come out before the scheme can be covered in depth.
As a word of caution, Birmingham has an atrocious record for building proposed tall buildings. Out of all the buildings proposed over the past decade over 100 metres tall only one has been built with one on hold, and others such as the V Building, Broad Street Tower, VTP, and 103 Colmore Row having not even started on site and the likes of Arena Central having long since bitten the dust.
