Five Blocks Proposed For Elephant and Castle

Published on 22-10-2008 by Skyscrapernews.com
Planning applications have been submitted for some of the smaller apartment blocks that will replace the accommodation for Heygate Estate residents in London's Elephant and Castle.

The five separate planning applications come from three different architects with Metaphorm employing their usual colourful touch in designing two of the schemes, Brandon Street and Library Street which will have 18 and 40 apartments respectively.

S333 Architects has designed a 52 home block overlooking Old Kent Road with diamondesque patterns on the cladding, whilst the tallest of the planning applications, a 9 floor 37 unit tower overlooking Townsend Street and Comus Place comes from the pens of Loates-Taylor Shannon Architects.

Rounding off the five new proposals are Sarah Wigglesworth Architects who have come up with 15 homes on St Georges Road and Prospect House with wooden louvres and recessed balconies.

Totalling 162 homes, all of the schemes are to be managed by London & Quadrant Housing Association who aim at offering a mix of housing aimed at the private market and affordable sectors.

Southwark Council is expected to judge each of the applications in December 2008 with construction starting at the beginning of 2009 if they get planning approval rounding off almost a decade of design work.

This isn't the only good news for Elephant and Castle right now. Despite the dark days of the credit crunch, developer First Base are expected to begin construction on their 147 metre tall tower, 360 London (formerly the London Park Hotel) by the end of the year aiming for a December 2010 finish.
