Croydons New Civic Building Revealed

Published on 23-01-2009 by Skyscrapernews.com
EPR Architects has revealed more about the forthcoming plans for the new headquarters of Croydon Council.

Croydon Civic Centre will stand on a site immediately adjacent the grade 2 star listed former Town Hall and clock tower and be connected to it via a footbridge that straddles Mint Walk.

The plans feature a stepped building that rises to fourteen floors above ground level with the lower roofs of the steps able to function as substantial roof terraces. Protecting them from the wind are façade overruns of the outer skin of the double-layered glazing giving an angular look to what would otherwise be rectangularly shaped blocks.

The glass façade on Fell Road adds to this more by angling out slightly over what will be the pavement whilst on the other side the building is angled slightly away from the Town Hall and mint walk giving the historic building room to breathe.

The middle stepped section contains an atrium to flood the building with light from the inside. Natural light is one of the recurring themes throughout and this is further accentuated by a series of scenic glass lifts that will run up and down the insides all the way to the roof.

As well as offering over 21,000 square metres of office space for the council to operate from, much of the lowest step will have a double height "One Stop" area for citizens to use and interact with their council, real difference compared to the dingy council offices so many of us are used to.

This redevelopment is part of a wider long-term masterplan that will also see Taberner House go, a residential tower built to the immediate west of the Civic Centre on Fell Road, and perhaps one day even a series of skyscrapers on Fairfields Hall.

Croydon Council has had big plans for years and little has come of them but at least their future council offices are guaranteed a tenant making the route to delivery so much easier.
