Work Moves Ahead On Manc Paul Smith Store

Ever since Selfridges opened an iconic landmark department store in Birmingham other developers have looked on and realised they can probably do the same in other regional British cities.

The latest of these is wannabes is Allied London which has hired Gensler to come up with what they hope will be a distinctive new flagship shop for British fashion designer, Paul Smith, at 1 Crown Square. This sites is slap back in the heart of Spinningfields on a junction next to The Avenue, one of the main pedestrian routes through the area.

The building starts at ground level with the shop prominently on display thanks to 9 metre tall glazing that wraps around it filling the entire bottom third of the buildings rectangular volume. Slender columns add some vertical articulation to the design. The rising lines of these columns are continued in the upper four levels of the building along with a smattering of multi coloured vertical lines.

Despite the aspirations of a developer eager to hype it, it has none of the "wow" that Selfridges exudes, or even the unique notability of the nearby award winning Civil Justice Centre.

Originally the block was intended to be a speculative office but this has changed thanks to the declining demand for such space within Manchester as the economy has faltered. It was this faltering which caused Allied London to look elsewhere and decide to reconfigure the block into it's current arrangement whereby retail leads the scheme.

Spurred on by their major retail let, piling has finished on site and the developer is now very slowly pressing on with other work.
