RMJM and Simpson Pen Major Glasgow Hotels

Glasgow seems to be going through something of a glut for proposed hotels in recent months and the latest of these are a couple of designs by Ian Simpson Architects and RMJM as the city continues to update its often tired hotel stock.

First up is Ian Simpson's plans for Progress Property Developments which features a 203 bedroom hotel on a site that will be tied into the 2014 Commonwealth Games and stands nearby to Celtic Park.

Rising a modest ten floors tall and overlooking a public plaza, the oblong massed building features a double height ground floor and another floor above it which are recessed from the main bulk of the building. The upper eight floors have a slight overhang and clearly betray their architectural origins thanks to a signature patchwork of pale pink cladding and aquamarine glass.

Mixed-use in nature, RMJM's design is substantially taller and planned to rise in the city centre of Glasgow overlooking Bath Street and Pitt Street. With 15 storeys it will have the hotel reception, restaurant and foyer on the ground floor with a 210 bedroom hotel above it all the way up to the seventh floor.

The design is dominated by dark cladding that wraps around the centre of the building with vertical slits for windows. The upper floors are set back slightly with vertical ribbons of pale red and floor to ceiling glazing. This fašade treatment also exists on the corner of Pitt Street and Bath Street giving a welcome contrast to the darker cladding immediately above it.

The Ian Simpson plans are set to have a rapid development timetable and it's hoped it could open as soon as 2011, whilst RMJMs designs will depend on whether they can get planning permission first.
