Assael Design Compact Urban Quarter In Hounslow

Published on 04-09-2009 by
Plans are afoot by Assael Architecture to refurbish the Alfa Laval Tower in Hounslow, West London, that overlooks the elevated Great West Road.

This area of London is one of the earliest clusters of tall buildings in the entire country with some of the towers there dating from the 1930s and 1940s. These days it's remained something of a central business district with the most notable occupier being GlaxoSmithklineBeecham who occupy a massive headquarters there.

Working for developer Carlton Properties, Assael's plans involve taking one of the older blocks, the Alfa Laval Tower that was completed in 1967 and renovating it into a 180 room hotel. As well as this the plans also involve taking the abandoned land to the east of the tower, a significantly sized site of approximately 100 x 100 metres and building on it.

This will see the addition of a second hotel of 151 rooms, 4,677 square metres of office space, 228 square metres of retail space, and 206 new homes ranging from apartments to actual houses. Also included, as one would expect from its proximity to a major trunk road, is parking for 361 cars.

This isn't the first time that this formula of renovating an existing building combined with constructing a compact new urban quarter has been tried by a developer here. Next door on the eastern side of the site the Great West Quarter is currently under construction by Barratt Homes that includes the rebuilding of the listed Wallis House and the building of a new tower called Skylon which will be immediately adjacent the east of the Alfa Laval site.

It's proven a successful development, and with the architect of both projects being Assael Architecture, the developer of Alfa Laval will be hoping they can pull it off as Barratt has.
